It offers uniform dimensions and tolerance so that when a keyway is milled or broached, the resulting key fits snugly and resists twisting inside a shaft and hub. Smaller lengths can be chosen to lower shipping costs by shipping via UPS, while larger quantities and weights may require freight services.
